WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 — The Labor Department announced yesterday that 85,000 jobs were lost last month, bringing the total jobs lost in 2009 to more than 4.2 million.

Since the beginning of the depression in December 2007, nearly 8 million jobs have disappeared.

“Official” unemployment continues to hover at 10 percent, while real unemployment, which includes long-term unemployed and involuntary part-time employed workers, has again reached 22 percent.

Urban unemployment remains higher than the average, with Detroit having the highest at 50 percent.
