WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 — The Labor Department’s report on Friday claiming a drop in “official” unemployment does not tell the whole story. “Officially,” the unemployment rate fell to 9.7 percent, even though 20,000 more jobs disappeared in December. This was for two reasons: first, the “seasonal adjustment” and hiring of temporary workers for the 2010 Census; second, thousands of workers were “disappeared” from the statistics because they had been out of work longer than two years. The real unemployment numbers continue to climb, exceeding 22 percent for the first time since the 1930s |
