PORCUPINE, Rep. of Lakotah, Jan. 29 — A state of emergency has been declared on Lakotah territory after dozens have been left without heat in freezing temperatures.

The LaCreek Electric Company has been pulling gas meters of those in the Pine Ridge territory who owe back-due bills, in spite of the weather. Pulling gas meters in winter months is illegal in most U.S. states.

Lakotah elders are asking that assistance be sent to the Pine Ridge Emergency Fund, c/o Economic Development Association, P.O. Box 669, Pine Ridge, SD 57770-0669, or call (605) 867-5771, Ext. 13.
