DETROIT, Mar. 3 — Yesterday evening, the home of Sylvia Young and her five children caught fire. Tragically, three of her children died. Earlier in the day, DTE Energy had cut off electricity to the home because the previous tenants had jury-rigged the power lines. The landlord had given Young a kerosene heater, which is believed to have exploded, causing the fire. This brings the number of deaths in Detroit this winter due to utility-shutoff-related incidents up to 14. Most of those who have died have been elderly or retired workers living on pensions or Social Security. |
