ATHENS, Greece, Feb. 25 — For the second time in two weeks, workers staged a 24-hour general strike to protest austerity budget measures proposed by the Greek government.

Virtually all businesses were closed, including factories, retail stores, airports and seaports. An estimated 2 million workers participated in the strike, with tens of thousands protesting in the streets of Athens and other major cities.

Greece’s social-democratic government is attempting to impose wage freezes, cuts in social programs, a rise in the fuel tax and an end to tax deductions for public workers.
