BAGHDAD, Occupied Iraq, Mar. 14 — With over half the votes still to be counted, the shape of the parliamentary election appears to be coming into focus, with the image showing deepening sectarian division. The “moderate” Shi’ite Islamists around Nuri al-Maliki are leading in Baghdad, Basra and other Shi’ite areas. The “moderate” Sunni Islamists around Iyad al-Lawi, who presented themselves as “secular” are leading in mostly Sunni areas, as well as in the northern Kirkuk region. The more radical Shi’ite Islamists and Kurdish nationalists are also making a significant showing. |
